Abstract

ABSTRACT

This  research  is  of  the  purpose  to  study  the  concept  of  the  matter  of Sambhavesī  in  Theravāda  Buddhism,  to  clearly  study  who  the  Sambhavesī  is  and  from  where  he  comes  and  to  help  the  Buddhists  to   understand  it  rightly  according  to the Buddhist  Scriptures.

From  the  research,  it  is  found  that  the  concept  of  Sambhavesī  in  Theravāda  Buddhism  is  that  Sambhavesī  consists  of  Khandha  and Āyatana   all  of  which  are generally  called  bodies  and  minds  belonging  to  the  human  beings,  the  animals,  the  deities,  Rupabrahma  and  Arupabrahma.  The  fact  that  one  is  born  as  a  man,  an  animal  or  a  deity  is because of  the  power  of  action,  both  good  one  and  bad  one.  The  state  of  being  or  the  process  of  being  appear  with  the  help  of  one  another,  and  extinguishes  with  the  cause  and  the  factor. The Sambhavesīs can develop themselves to be away from the state of  Sambhavesī with the development of the Four Foundations of Mindfulness all  of  which  are  the  states  of  turning  around  and  are  the  causes  and  the  effects.

In  Thai  societies  at  the  level of  the  villagers,  it  is  said  that  the  spirits,  the  ghosts  and  the  monsters  are  the  secreted  worldly  consciousness, but  the  Sambhavesīs  are  the  wandering  spirits

The  academics  are  of  the  concepts  that  the  consciousness  (Viññāna)  is  of  the  duty  to  receive  and  know  the  temperaments  or  it  thinks  a  about  the  different  temperaments  through  the  eyes,  the  ears,  the  nose,  the  tongue,   the  body  and  the  brain.

This  consciousness  is  of  the  duty  to acknowledge the  temperaments  or  to  think  about  the  different  temperaments  through  the  eyes,  the  ears, the  nose,  the  tongue,  the  body  and  the  brain.

This  consciousness  must  work  through  the  system  of  the  nervous  touch  which  can  cause  one  to  see  and  to  hear  etc.  It  does  not  cause  one  to  fear  the  various  forms  such  as  the  ghost,  Asurakāya (The frightened ghost)  and  the  hungry  ghost  (Peta)  which  were  roaming  in  the  world  and  caused  us  to  be  in  trouble.  In  the  matter  of  chanting  the  Paritta  or  Montra,  there  is  a  belief  that  after  chanting, the  spirit  will  protect  oneself,  the  sons,  the  daughters  and  the  nephews  to  be  away  from  various  dangers

So,  to  study  about  the  Sambhavesī  is  useful  for  the  Thai  people  who  believe  in  Buddhism to build up the rightiousness in worshipping the six directions with the gratitude etc. possessed by the Thai people who believe in   Sambhavesī wrongly. This point will be the minus effect to oneself and others both at present and in the futures. This fact is not in compliance with the Buddhist Teaching that Sambhavesī is not consciousness searching for the place to be reborn. Sambhavesī is the ordinary person and the Sekha person.
