Abstract

This thesis is a documentary research. The purpose of studies is to study life’s process according to mechanism, to study life’s process according to Theravāda Buddhist Philosophy and to comparatively study similar ideas and different ideas.   

                   The research found as follows: The life’s process according to mechanism has evolved from high animals. High animals have evolved from low animals and low animals have evolved from first cell which composed of matter and energy. And we can say in brief that human evolves from matter and energy. All behaviors of human occur and happen according to cause of physics. Mechanists have believed that all things occur from some momentums, the present moments are result of past moments, and the future moments are result of present moment. In case of action, the development of human’s life is the same as before. All actions happen from momentum. There is no freedom or liberty, neither an environment, society values, education, habit, parents, relatives and all friends etc. These are momentums of human. Therefore, development of human must follow the law of mechanic. This may match with thing that we want such as : wanting to be robber, good man, and holy man etc.

                   The life’s process according to Theravāda Buddhist Philosophy says that life is a part of Nāma-rūpa or evolve from Nāma-rūpa (material and immaterial), but Nāma-rūpa is occurred by cause. The life have not grown by accident, all things about human must have cause and effect. The life’s process, activity, and life’s development, and those things have grown by cause and effect. Therefore, cause and effect is the most important thing for creating the life getting what we need. So development of human according to Paticcasamuppāda in Theravāda Buddhist Philosophy emphasized on cause and effect, to make condition for things that we wish. If we wish to be robber, we must make condition for robber. If we wish to be a Holy man, a politician, or Arahanta etc, one should make condition for these things. However, those conditions have two main sites, the first is inner condition and the second is external which Buddhist philosophy called that Paratoghosa (hearing or learning from others), Yonisomanasikāra (analytical reflection), Kalayānamittā (having good friend), Pāpamitta (to have evil friends) etc. But all these conditions do not rise by chance, they rise to be chain.

                   We can observe the life’s process in both views, it is similarity, but something is different.  Both Mechanists and Buddhists believe in  the causes and the conditions.  Mechanists could see only physical or outside, they cannot see inside mind or immaterial. Therefore, the life’s development has some difference. Mechanists only develop condition that to be outside or material, but Buddhist philosophy develops conditions in mentality and physicality.
