Abstract

This research is to analytically study of the support between the state and religion appearing in Buddhist scriptures : A case study of King Pasenadikosala and Buddhism. The research is of 3 Objectives, namely: 1. to study the meaning and the relationship between the religion and the dominion, 2. to study the method of support between the religion and the dominion, 3. to study the accomplishment of the support between the religion and the dominion.

From the research, it is found that the religion means the religions administration the composit parts of which are the founders of religion, the religions doctrines, the religions ceremonies, the religions persons and the religions places all of which took place to be the refuges of the people who are desirous of mental peace. In Buddhism, the Buddha propagated the Doctrinal principles to the Buddhists with the purpose of helping them to receive the primary benefit of living together happily up to the highest benefit, that is to attain Nibbana without the limit of class, caste, nationality or religion. Regarding the dominion, it means the administration of each and every state which is of 4 types of poreers in administration, namely: - the people, the land, the government and the democratic power. That is to say, the administration no matter whether it is of the type of the absolute monarchy, the democracy or the harmonious Doctrine, is of the aim of peace, happiness and progress of the country. It emphasizes that the people’s living happily is the important target.

Both the dominion and the religion have co-relation to each other and are of the same objective that is to bring peace to societies,  so that the members of the societies may live together happily and peacefully and may teach the people to be of morality and good conduct and to know how to be responsible for their duties to lessen and solve the problems faced by the people in societies.

The method of supporting one another between the dominion and the religion can be concluded as follows:- In religion, the Buddha kindly helped King Pasenadikosala together with the people in Kosala State by pointing out to them the disadvantages and advising the useful matter to them from the lower up to the highest levels. More over, they all had also to be of heedfulness. Regarding the support which the domination did to the religion it is found that King Pasenadikosala paid his respect to Buddhism by following the Buddhism by following the Buddha’s principle of teaching and supporting Buddhism with 4 necessary factors and protecting Buddhism as much as possible such as looking after the Bhikkhu’s and Bhikkhuni’s behaviours for preventing them for doing bad actions which would be of bad outcome towards Buddhim.

Regarding the accomplishment of the support between the dominion and the religion, it is found that it took place for each other’s happiness and benefit. That is to say each part gave out and received the out come arising from donation. For example, Buddhism received convenience with the four factors from the dominion such as food, cloths, permanent materials, residence, medicines and the male and female disciple who supported Buddhism. In addition to what was mentioned, Buddhism still received friendship for different nations, the fact of which help Buddhism to be spread out more easily.

On the part of the dominion, it is found that it received many results from the religion such as there were more good people who were of precepts and Doctrines in the dominion the fact of which caused those people to be well established in precepts and Doctrines. The said fact caused the country to b e in happiness and peace. This fact enabled the king to be mentally happy and the Royal Throne was also strong because of having good people to help and solve the problems on behalf the king and be the ears and the eyes on behalf of the country.
