Abstract

The objectives of the research were to study the history and development of Buddhist art in Chiang Rai and then analyze the value of Buddhist art in Chiang Rai. The research found that the Buddhist art in Chiang Rai has been mixed with and influenced by various arts. At the present time, it still represents the current Buddhist identity which embodies the past to present.

The most important aspect of Buddhist art in Chiang Rai is Chiang Saen Buddhist art. There are many examples such as sculptures and architecture. Both are constructed to represent the Chiang Saen Buddha image. These sculptures have a unique character from we have seen at the temple. The buildings are constructed by bricks. The unique temple of Chiang Saen is known as “ a roof that shows the structure." There is no ceiling and all roofs can be seen. The paintings created after the 25th century centered around the lifestyle of the North part, which is related to Buddhism.

The identity of Buddhist art depends on a variety of factors. Two vital factors for its identity include the value of teaching the Dhamma and propaganda. A few other examples include displaying Buddhist art, studying history, and sharing its story from the past to the present. The value of Buddhist art as an image can be seen in its appealing aesthetics and surface beauty. The value of Buddhist art within social context is its reflection on the way of life and, lastly, the value of Buddhist art within a monetary context is its acting function as an economic support through its materials and goods.
