The Threefold Training (Tisikkhã) and the Enlightenment in Theravada Buddhist Scriptures

Abstract

 

This thesis has three objectives, 1) to study of the Threefold Training (Tisikkhã) appearing in Theravada Buddhism, 2) to study of the enlightenment in Theravada Buddhism, and 3) to analyze of the relation of the Threefold Training and the Enlightenment in Buddhism.

             The result of study found that.-

             The Threefold Training (Tisikkhã) is the principle of Buddhism, the practice is to change oneself by training in mentality to get the wisdom seeing the truth until to attain the enlightenment, that is Nibbãna: the final goal. The Tisikkhã is the main principle to make men grow up with studying and developing themselves in their both lives and society peacefully, happily, and liberate from violence. Finally, they had achieved what they wished. The Tisikkhã is consist of Sîla: morality, Samãdhi: concentration, and Paññã: wisdom, other hands, it is Adhisîla-sikkhã: training in higher morality, Adhicitta-sikkhã: training in higher mentality, and Adhipaññã-sikkhã: training in higher wisdom. It is classified in the Noble Eightfold Path what should be developed.

             The enlightenment in Theravada Buddhism found that. The enlightenment means to attain the nine supermundane states, the thing to be realized of the four Noble Truths and to be practiced or cultivated of the four foundations of mindfulness; body, feeling, mind, and mind-objects. The cultivation of meditation is the contemplation of form and mind that appearing continuously activities, till the practitioner has seen the reality state of the Three Characteristics. When the faculties had strength, the knowledge (Vipassanãñna) will appear seeing the Paths and the Fruitions until to attain to be the holy persons. In Buddhism has classified the holy persons into four levels e.g., Sotãpanna:Stream-Enterer, Sakadãgãmi: Once-Returner, Anãgãmi: Non-Returner, and Arahanta: Worthy One.

             The relation of the Threefold Training and the Enlightenment in Buddhism found that Sîla: morality is the foundation of Samãdhi: concentration to purify one’s mind, when morality and concentration are purified, it is to make power of Paññã: wisdom occurring until attain the Dhamma. The enlightenment is practiced by the way of the Noble Eightfold Path and completed by Sîla, Samãdhi, and Paññã. It is said that the practice of the Noble Eightfold Path leading to the enlightenment by the Threefold Training.
