An Analysis of Buddha’s Teachings for Learning English of Prathomsuksa VI Students at Nitiwit School, Muang District, Nan Province

Abstract

The thesis has three objectives: 1) to explore the Buddha’s teachings on the principle of learning according to the Buddhist texts, 2) to investigate the state of teaching English in Prathomsuksa VI students at Nitiwit School, Muang District, Nan Province and 3) to analyze the Buddha’s teachings in learning English for Prathomsuksa VI students at Nitiwit School, Muang District, Nan Province.

             The research was conducted by the qualitative research method with related to documents and research works. The tools for the data gathering were used the in - depth interview and observation.

             The results revealed that the Buddha’s teachings that accord with the principles of learning are called the Kalyànamitta-dhamma or the 7 qualities of a good friend viz. lovable, respectable, adorable, being a counselor, being a patient listener, able to deliver deep discourses or to treat profound subjects. It also accord with the doctrine called Iddhipàda or the 4 paths of accomplishment viz. aspiration, energy, thoughtfulness and investigation which should be adopted and applied in both by teachers and students. The other Buddha’s teachings that accord with the principles of learning is called Desanàvidhi or the Buddha’s style of teaching viz. 1) Discussion, 2) lecture,  3) Question and Answer and 4) Laying down the course of training.

 

             For the state of teaching English in Nitiwit School, it was found that when the Primary VI learn English they use an English Program. It focuses an English about 1) Using it to communicate. 2) Knowing the culture of the language. 3) Using English to connect with other subjects. 4) When you learn English you can communicate with other countries in and out of school. Using appropriate and modern world.

 

As regards an analysis of the Buddha’s teachings in English learning for the Prathom Suksa VI students of Nitiwit School, it was found that the teachers have moral called the Kalyànamitta-dhamma. They were good persons, kind and helpful.  They try to educate and encourage their students to apply knowledge to the lifestyle. For Iddhipada, it was found that teachers have aspiration in teaching,  According to the students, they were happy to learn and obey their teachers in order to get the good results. They do exercise as assigned by the teachers. When they have learnt theirs errors from teachers, they try to develop theirs works to get more complete.  For the Buddha’s four styles of teaching, it was found that the teachers in Nitiwit School adopted the discussion as the conversation, the lecture, the question and answer, and laying down regulations in the classroom such as using English medium and submitting homework on scheduled time.
