Abstract

This thesis entitled “The Role of Queen Cammadevi with Promoting the Stability of Buddhism in Lamphun” is of three objectives: 1) to investigate the concept of promoting the stability in Buddhism, 2) to explore the role of Queen Cammadevi as a Buddhist role model and 3) to analyze the role of Queen Cammadevã in promoting the stability of Buddhism in Lamphun province. The study was conducted by the qualitative research method by analyzing the documents and In-depth interview from 16 experts of Buddhist monk and laypeople.

According to the concept of promoting the stability in Buddhism, it was found that the creating stability in Buddhism has been developed in the Buddha’s time.            That is to say, in each period of Buddhism, there have been many threatening events and threats to Buddhism both internal and external threats. However, the religious and secular leaders had collaborated in solving those problems. The crucial aim of promoting the stability in Buddhism is to preserve the Doctrine and Discipline (Dhamma and Vinaya) that was fundamental teaching of the Buddha and to prolong Buddhism as the heritage of mankind. There were models of Buddhist layman and laywoman who had contributed to the stability of Buddhism in the Buddha’s time, such as Sudattaanàthabiņóikagahapati, Cittagahapati and Sujàtà etc.

Regarding Queen Cammadevi as a Buddhist role model, it was found that she was a person who had behaved as a good model for people and society.                     In addition, she followed the Doctrine of Buddhism and was considered to be a Buddhist role model as a Buddhist laywoman.  Not only Queen Cammadevi followed the teachings of Buddhism, but she also encouraged people to follow that doctrine. She also encouraged the public to follow the duties of the Buddhists as living wisely based on the Five Precepts and the five ennobling virtues. As a Queen in Buddhism, she had practiced and followed the Buddhist Doctrines as: Ràjadhamma or virtues of a ruler, Cakkavatti-vatta or duties of a universal king or a great ruler and Ràja-saïgahavatthu or virtues making for national integration. The aforementioned Buddhist doctrines were used as a tool to govern the country and people to create happiness, peace and tranquility. As a model of mother, wife and children in Buddhism, she had practiced the Buddhist doctrine called Disà or six directions in dealing with related persons and in order to create equilibrium and the family happiness.

When the roles of Queen Cammadevi in promoting the stability of Buddhism in Lamphun province were analyzed, it was found that she has made a significant contribution to the stability of Buddhism in Lamphun province. Regarding the religious teaching, she invited the Tipñaka Master to stay in Hariphunchai region and was a model of practicing and living by Buddhist principles strictly. As a religious person, she paid the attention to community of monk and her son by promoting education and providing opportunities for religious practice, including the administration of various areas and encouraging the development of people to practice Dhamma for improving the quality of life. On religious places, she was a host of the temples construction, encouraged the vassals and people to participate of many temples in the area of Lamphun. And those temples have become important historical sites that consisted of historical value and tourist attraction of Lamphun province.            On the religious object, she has an important part of creating the Buddha amulet of Lamphun clan, for the sake of promoting the Buddhist arts and the recollection of the Buddha. Lastly on the religious rites, she had laid the foundation for preserving the traditional ceremonies inherited to the present day viz., Deva Sacrificial Ritual, Water-Pouring Ceremony and Life Prolonging Ceremony.
