Abstract

Abstract

This thematic paper is of 3 objectives: 1) to study principles of Sangahavatthu in Buddhist Scripture, 2) to study Visakhā Mahaupāsikā’s background and her way of living in society, and 3) to critically analyze the role of Visakhā Mahaupāsikā for Strengthening Social Peace by using the tool of documentary-qualitative research.

From the research, it is found the following:

             (1) Peaceful society will exist on the basis of love, unity, kindness to each other according to principles of Sangahavatthu comprising of 4 subjects of sympathy: 1.‘Dāna’, generosity, 2.‘Piyavācā, kindly and sweet speech with sincerity, 3. ‘Atthacariyā, self-sacrifice for others, and 4. ‘Samānattatā’, being even and equal of a person.  It can be said that Sangahavatthu is the practice that can be used to manage people in society for peace as this Dhamma is a conceptual idea of supporting or human relations for blending social members for peace.

             (2) The brainy style of Visakhā should be brought to use as a role-model to modern women, such as her smart and careful ways of solving problems with knowing how to act and being patient, having effort to be able to happily live together with her husband’s family as well as living with Buddhism

             (3) Researcher has found a new dimensional aspect that the lessonlearned from this research can be extracted from dimensional aspect by the implementation of ‘4 S’ to suit the present society which is still unequal; this Sangahavatthu is the first door to bring oneself, families, society into the atmosphere of happiness and calmness without problems because of having gone through the process of improvement under it, peace can really happen.  The mentioned ‘4 S’ as the new dimensional aspect stands for Settle, Satisfied, Smart and Sociability which are extracted from the understanding of Sangahavatthu principles that can be useful to modern women that will lead society to sustainable peace.
