Abstract

 

             The present thesis has scrutinized the principles of Buddhism stated in Paya Isan, the Northeastern proverb, involving the three predominant objectives viz. 1) to study Paya Isan, 2) to study the principles of Buddhism described in Paya Isan and 3) to analyze the principles of Buddhism presented in Paya Isan. The documentary research has been carried out in the present study respectively.

 

             Findings of the study:

 

             Paya Isan has categorized as a kind of the proverb composed of the specific language in Isan involving the verse for instructing, teaching and admonishing the people in any communities as the aphorism in order to correctly behave both of mental and physical performs. The contents of Paya Isan has been interpolated by the principles of Buddhism including initially the fundamental of basic living and ethics, involving the process of instructing the people of the Isan philosophers in the past. Paya Isan has been evaluated as the communicative medium in propagating the emotions, instructions and persuasions, conducting the valuable heirloom in language, demonstrating the state of societies and entertaining the people.

 

             The principles of Buddhism described in Paya Isan can be summarized as the following details; harmoniousness, loving-kindness and friendliness, principles of service including generosity, kindly speech, useful conduct, and even and equal treatment, the five precepts, abstaining from killing, performing lovingkindness, performing right-livelihood, abstaining from stealing, overcoming subjective sensuality, observing the virtues of great assistance viz. mindfulness and clear comprehension in practicing and following the principle of noble eightfold path.

          The study, furthermore, has been found that the principles of Buddhism demonstrated in Paya Isan have been written by the Isan philosophers in verse interpolating the suggestions, instructions, advising of the practical ways in living, suggestions of the initial ways in living to control the behavior and practices for the advancement of life and becoming the trusted mental models either of the leaders and the followers of the members in the community including family and the higher units. Paya Isan, on the other hand, has cultivated the harmoniousness in the society, loving and respecting each other, the unity and alternate-less, the happiness and the adhering in the virtues of the people throughout tree ways viz. mental, physical and discourse.
