Abstract

Abstract

This thesis is 3 objectives, they are; 1) to study of the craving in Buddhism, 2) to study of the craving in Christianity and 3) to comparatively study of craving in Buddhism and Christianity. This study is the documentary research which leading to analyze, to synthesize and descriptive comparison.

The craving in Buddhism it means thirst that is craving settling in the mind of common person. Craving is the cause of lust and for sensual pleasures. The classification of craving makes the researcher understand it respectively and correctly. For the benefit of understanding of the real craving, craving can be concluded into three kinds, e.g., 1) by aspects, 2) by senses, and 3) by times. The cause and the origin of craving having factor is the internal sense-bases contact with external sense-bases arising of consciousness is called contact; the contact is condition of the feeling. The sense-object is happy or unhappy, and neutral. There has the method of abandonment or extinction, the way of practice for purification of the Holy Life, the purification of morality, and the extinction of suffering according to the four Noble Truths, e.g., 1) dukkha, 2) the samudaya, 3) niroda, and 4) magga, which practice the Eightfold Path together with preserve the morality, concentration and wisdom, when completed wisdom, it can abandon of craving completely.

The craving in Christianity is classified in the greed or affection. There are many kinds of love. Especially human’s loving is mixed with the defilements which is lust. That is the love wishing return for each others. The kinds of craving, mind and flesh, in fact, the fighting is the inherited matter from the sin, it is the result of sin, it is the cause and origin of craving. It is greed for existence what is not given. The greed is from Satan, it makes human beings make sexual misconduct, testing one’s feeling of Satan and cleaning the purified mind. The mind is the personality of morality. The heart is raised of good thinking, morality can expiate sin for cancel all sin neither origin nor individual. Praying is to meet God, it is the relationship of God and human beings, it is the conversation with God by loving, it is contact with God, the reaction to God, request for helping from God. These are the relation as the closeness of one’s heart and other’s heart which is fully loving-kindness to each others.

The comparison of both Buddhism and Christianity emphasize the importance of craving, and they have also the way of improvement of craving. The different way in practice by holding sense-objects, Buddhism taught to control their emotion by observation of the mental states according to the truth and not clinging, not refuge the external things. Christianity taught to bow the mind for praying and accept of helping from God and Jesus etc.
