Abstract

The primary objective of this study was aimed to examine the attitude toward Upapatasantigatha chanting of the Buddhist laities at WatPichayayatikaram, Bangkok, and to investigate problems and obstacles and suggestions on Upapatasantigatha chanting of the Buddhist laities at WatPichayayatikaram, Bangkok

In present study, the samples were selected using the purposive sampling method; theparticipants included one hundred and fifty Buddhist laities who attended  the Upapatasantigatha chanting ceremony at WatPhichayayatikaram, Bangkok on 5th December 2014. The instrument used in this study included the researcher-developed questionnaires with the confidence coefficient of 0.94. For data analysis, the descriptive statistics implemented included percentage, mean and standard deviation. The statistics used regarding to research objectives included the statistics for the dependent sample t-test and Analysis of Covariance: ANOVA). The results showed as follows.

Overall, the respondents’ attitude toward the Upapatasantigatha chanting was at high level. Majority believed that the activity was useful to mental health development, enabling people to make a merit, meditation practices, and be happy.  The respondents reported no different attitude towards Upapatasantigatha chanting on all respects of areas at statistically significant level 0.05. The respondents aged between 21-35 years old were of the rather different opinion attitudes toward Upapatasantigatha chanting from those aged between 15-20 years old at statistically significant level 0.05.

Regarding to problems, obstacles, and suggestions on the Upapatasantigatha chanting; it found that the respondents persuaded their friends to participate in the activity, preparation one’s self and supplies to join the activity, sharing goods and the necessities for the activity regularly. The general public should be encouraged to partake in the activity to help nurture and sustain the Buddhism, the public relation activities should be conducted widely, and the cleanliness and the number of available toilets, facilities and services provided by the organizing committee should be awared.
