Abstract

Abstract

This thesis has three objectives, namely to study Vicikicchānivāraña in Theravāda Buddhist Scriptures, to study the Doctrinal principles to get rid of Vicikicchānivāraña, of study the method of practicing the Dhammas to get rid of Vicikicchānivāraña in Theravāda Buddhist Scriptures. This study is carried out by the study of various scriptures in Theravāda Buddhism. The said scriptures are the three Baskets, the commentaries, the Sub-Conmentaries and the different related texts. This study is carried out by collecting the mentioned texts to be explained and checked for the correctness by the many experts and the advising teachers.

From the study, it found that Vicikicchā is the doctrine of the doubt is of the characteristic of the shaking of thought as its duty, is of. no decision in as its result and is of making something in mind without the delication which is the close cause.

The doctrinal principle to get rid of the Vicikicchānivāraña is of three types namely 1) Jhānas in Vitaka, Vijâra, Piti, Sukha, Ekakata where happiness from Jhānas can suppress Vicikicchānivāraña in the form of Vikkhambhanapahana 2) Vipassanâ which is the noting of Nâma - Rûpa until getting their tilakkâņa and release doubt in confronting phenomena. This is classified as a temporary release of Vicikicchānivāraña called Tadangapahana. 3) Magga in Sotāpattimagga which can eliminate Vicikicchā permanently in the form of Samuchetapahana.

The practice to get rid of Vicikicchānivāraña in the theravāda Buddhism consists of 3 formats which are 1) Samathabhāvanā a meditation form to get Jhānas. Organ which is Vitaka, Vicgāra, Pīti, Sukha, Ekakatā. to be arisen, 2) Vipassanābhāvanā which is the practicing of Insight Meditation in 6 temperaments of Nāma – Rūpa to generate Wisdom under the 4 Foundations of mindfulness where the Mind focused on the Body called Kāyānupassanā-satipaţţhānā the Feeling called Vedanānupassanā-satipaţţhānā, the Citta called the Cittānupassanā-satipaţţhānā, the dhamma called Dhammānupassanā-satipaţţhānā The Magga, this is the result of Vipassanābhāvanā where wisdom has arisen to the level of Sottāpanna and Vicikicchānivāraña completely destroyed.
