Abstract

Abstract

This thesis contains 3 objectives, namely: - 1) to study viewpoints regarding the theory of the state of having a long life in the present academics, 2) to study viewpoints regarding the state of living a long life according to the principles of Iddhipada in the Buddhist Scriptures and 3) to propose a way of self-practice to aid in living along life according to the principles of the 4 Iddhipadas in Thai society.

From the research, we have found that the viewpoint of living a long life in the present environment mentions the birth of life consisting of the shell as a body which is sustained by chemical processes resulting from food and water consumption. The oxygen inside the shell creates the energy necessary for an extended life. Sickness has many forms which are a fact of life, but it must come to an end dictated by expected lifespan. However, the medical science explains that extended life results from inheritance, body, mind and behavior. Support a happy state of mind and healthy lifestyle assists in extending life. General health is highly important, good eating habits and reducing unhealthy practices while developing the mind has a very positive effect on life expectancy. The correct behavior to promote a state of happiness such as sufficient rest and proper exercise will result in a person living a long life.

In Buddhism longer life results from:- 1) having favourable conditions for physical and mental development, 2) to consume only what is sufficient for your needs, 3) to consume what is easily digested, 4) to travel at the proper time and 5) to behave in accordance with the Brabmacariya. In some Sutras, there are statements supporting the importance of precepts, good friends and the doctrines supporting one to have a long life such as Parca Ayussadhammas and Catu Iddhipada. The Buddha reflected on the power of Catu Iddhipadas which can drive away sickness. The Buddha also stated that if one practises  Iddhipadas  more and more, one will have a long life of up to 120 years.

The way of developing oneself to live a long life according to the principles of 4 Iddhipadas in Buddhism helps one to achieve the complex balance of looking after oneself and one’s health to live a long life while observing the moral principles of Buddhism. That is to bring to being the Doctrinal principles to be practiced according to the principles of 4 Iddhipadas: Chanda, Viriya, Citta and Vimanisa. By using wisdom searching for cause and effect with the proper process, the setting up of a work plan, estimating success and creating methods to solve problems or the affective results, and devoting oneself to the practice of living in accordance with the 4 Iddhipadas to ensure a long and healthy life. One must look after and support physical and mental health to achieve the correct balance which can support a long life expectancy.
