Abstract

The objectives of the thesis is to study the meaning and factors that cause fear. The fear concept is Theravãda Buddhism. The application of Buddhist principles to manage fear so that the person can properly deal with it through the study of general fear theory, fear which is in Buddhism and examples of those who have fear as well as how to apply Buddhist principles to get rid of it.

From the Study, fear naturally occurs to every one. Hence, it is considered a major enemy in our way of living. There are many types of fear which daily happen to humans, depending on individuals minds and how well they can manage it. So human seeks mind refuge as a fear prevention. Fear is caused by internal and external factor. External factors such as being afraid of bad things resulting from past actions, of losing the beloved ones, of changes in life or of natural disaster. Internal factors such as deteriorating physical health, illness, poor mental state and no self confidence. All these factors cause frequent anxiety resulting in different effects on body and mind such as high heart rate, paleness, fatigue and etc.

However, there are pro and con of being fearful. The pro is the understanding of truths in life. As long as human has ignorance, he will be afraid all the time which cause him to find ways to manage with fear in order to have a normal life. The  con is it causes unhealthy body and mind, anxiety and indecisive ability resulting in boreness and the  Lord Buddha realizes that fear is the great danger in life not only for human but also for angels, demon and Brahma who is born in various Obripooami. As mentioned in Buddhist scriptures such as Ajãtasattu king and War between Angels and Demon. Fear causes two effects. One is positive such as being scared of doing sin. Hence, being brave to do good deeds. Another is negative that is being afraid to develop oneself. Hence, being unable to achieve moral.

The Lord Buddha teaches Dhamma in order that people applies it to get rid of their fear by considering reasons, Dhamma and monkhood who are fearless and help people from fear because they do not desires which trigger fear. Developing oneself to understand the consequences of the fact, controlling mind to face with potential fear and manage it using the threefold training, rules of morality, concentration and intelligence, the noble eightfold paths, qualities making for intrepidity  are ways to manage fear. Fear management based on Buddhist causes various results. For example, concepts, traditions, and communicative. Although fear is something to be afraid of, one should not be too seared and find proper way to manage it utilizing Buddhist principles as tools to get rid of it and build up courage to continuously develop oneself and social.
