ABSTRACT

 

This thematic paper aims at studying the concept of holistic health in Buddhist Pali Canon (Tipitaka) and analyzing the patterns and the processes for building up the holistic health in TipitÚaka. It is qualitative and documentary style research

From the research, it is found that the concept of “holistic health” in TipitÚaka comprising 2 key terms i.e. The health and the holistic, The Holistic Health in Buddhist  according to TipitÚaka consists of  the 4 dimensions i.e. physical, social, mental and intellectual. Thus, the consequence of health according to Buddhism, focuses on happiness, state of bliss comprising Vijjā, Vimutti, Visuddhi, Santi, all of which are the states of  wholesomeness of life,  but the approach to the  holistic health or the principle of health the covers protection, the  promotion, the healing, and the curing through problem-solving approach called the Four Noble Truths.  For the patterns and the process for building up the holistic health in TipitÚaka, the  patterns of  mental health focus the 3 patterns i.e. :-  (1) chanting (2) meditation (concentration-mindfulness-wisdom) (3) dhammatalks (yonisomanasikāra)   and the patterns the process for building up the holistic health covering 4 dimensions i.e. :-     (1) physical with various patterns i.e. consumption etc. (2) societies or environment such as the community or the group and the nature (3) mine  and (4) wisdom which is Phojjhaṅga, Sanna, Satipattana, khan, Trinity, etc.
