Abstract

 

            This thesis is of  two major objectives:- 1) to study the doctrinal principles in PāsarāsiSutta, 2) to study the way of being away from the Five Sensual Pleasures (Kāmagunās). It is carried out by studying and collecting the data from Theravada Buddhist scriptures:- The Three Baskets, The Commentaries, The Sub-Commentaries and the other related scriptures, explained and verified by the experts.

            From the study, it is found that the PāsarāsiSutta is the Sutta which is searching of the way of the Noble One, and is the Sutta which is comparing with the animal snare, by comparing that the Five Sensual Pleasures (Kāmagunās) is the animal snare in the cycle of birth and death,  and also mentioning about the Buddha’s life, showing the essence of searching for the way of the Noble One beginning from practicing Samāpatti in Ālāra Ascetic’s and Udaka Ascetic’s monasteries. Then, Sahabodi Brahma asked Him to teach the Dhamma. Then, He met Upakājīvaka and taught the Dhamma to him and to the Five Monks (Pañcavaggīs). Then, He taught the method of practicing the Dhamma to be away from the Five Sensual Pleasures (Kāmagunās) with two Doctrinal Principles, namely:- Samatha and Vipassanā appearing in discourses (Sutta).

            The Five Sensusl Pleasures (Kāmagunās) consist of Form (Rūpa), Sound (Sadda), Smell (Gandha), Taste (Rasa) and Touch (Phoṭṭhabba) which is comparing with the animal snare and comprise to be Form (Rūpa) and Norm (Nāma), all of which are the external sense spheres, or the Five Aggregates (Kandha) which are the bases of Insight Meditation. The Five Aggregates (Kandha), the Twelve Spheres (Āyatana), the Eighteen Elements (Dhātu), the Twenty Two Sense-Faculities (Indriya), the Four Noble Truths (Ariyasacca), the Twelve Dependent Origination (Paicca-samuppāda) are the Doctrinal Organs.  The practice of the Calm Meditation and Insight Meditation with the help of the Four Foundations of Mindfulness (Catu-Satipaṭṭhāna) is to train the mind to be calm and to be away from the defilements.  It is also to consider the Form (Rūpa) and the Norm (Nāma) as the Five Aggregates which are under the rules of the Three Characteristics (Tilakkaa), Impermanence (Aniccatā),  Suffering (Dukkhā)  and Soullessness (Anattā)  which should not held by the human beings up to the state of  being bored and of  being able to consider to be away from the Five Sensual Pleasures (Kāmagunās).
