Abstract

 

ABSTRACT

 

     This Thesis of 2 objectives, namely:-1) to study the principle of practising the Insight Meditation in Theravāda Buddhist Scriptures, 2)to study the way of practicing the Insight Meditation with the types of Rising and falling  according   to  phrasophana-maha thera It is carried out by studying and collecting the data from Theravāda Buddhist Scriptures:-The Three Baskets, the Commentaries, the Sub- Commentaries and other related scriptures composes. explained and verified, by the expert.

           

                 From the study, it is found that the Insight Meditation is the practice according the principles of the Four Foundations of mindfulness which is firmly establishes in the temperament of the Foundations of mindfulness, namely: Kāyānupassanā Satipaṭṭhāna, Vedanānupassanā Satipaṭṭhāna, Cittānupassanā Satipaṭṭhāna and Dhammānupasanā Satipaṭṭhāna. These four temperaments can be classified in the form and the norm (Rūpa and Nāma). That is to say, Kāyānupassanā is classified in the form. Vedanānupassanā and Cittānupassanā are classified in the norm . Dhammānupasanā is classified both in the form and the norm with the important Doctrinal organ, the Ātāpi  which is the effort.  Satimā means the state of having mindfulness. Sampajāno means awareness.

 

                 The practice of the Insight Meditation of the type of Rising and falling is the way of practice in the way of the development by Ven.Sobhaņa Maha Thera                 (or Mahasi Syādor) according to the evidence appearing in Mahāsatipaṭṭhāna Sutta dealing with Kāyānupassanā in the group of Dhatumanasikara–Pabba which deals with Vāyodhātu–Pabba. This is to consider the Wind-Element as the wind in the womb which  pushes the wind in the stomach to rise and fall to the form (Rūpa) and the norm (Nāma). This is the consideration of the form and the norm as that of the characteristic of the Three Characteristics.
