Abstract

This thesis has two objectives :- To study the attainment of Dhamma in the Theravadā  Buddhism and to study the (Catu-Sammappadhāna) which support the attainment of Dhamma by  studying the data from the Theravada Buddhist Scriptures namely Tipiaka, Atthakathā, Tikā, and the other connected scriptures composed, explained and checked by advisors and experts.

From the studies, it is found that realization enlightenment means to attain the  Four Paths (Magga 4), the Four Fruitions (Phala 4), and the Unconditioned State (Nibbāna 1),which are called  Super mundane States (Lokuttara-Dhamma), In Catu-Sammappadhāna, which supported  the attainment of the Dhammas, it is found that these Doctrinal Principles are composed of 4 organs called “Effort”. On the other hand, this Doctrinal Principles also appeared in other Doctrinal Principles, but the ones appearing very clearly are the Bodhipakkhiya Dhamma 37,which are the Principles for enlightenment.  It is also found that every group of the Doctrinal Principles consists of “Viriya” (the Effort) i.e. Catu-Sammappadhāna, which is  the first group of Dhamma Bodhipakkhiya-Dhamma. There are  three interesting Principles which are, the Ātāpi (Effort), the Sathima (Mindfullness) and the Sampajāno (clear comprehension). It can be seen that one of the stated Doctrinal Principles is the Effort, which is concluded in the effort in Catu-Sammappadhāna. Next, it Catu-Iddhipada, in which Viriyindri is the Doctrinal Principles, refers to the effort in Catu-Sammappadhāna. After that, there the 5 Faculties and 5 Energies, which are the efforts in Catu-Sammappadhāna.  The 7 Bojjhagas,  Viriya Sabojjhaga  also quoted Viriya in 4 Sammappadhāna. Finally, the Noble Eightfold Path in Sammāvāyāma also quoted effort in Sammappadhāna.

So, the Effort is important for Dhamma attainment. If one is in lack of the effort, one will never attain the Dhamma. However, the effort, which is called Sammappadhāna will grow with the help of the relationship of different groups of Dhammas in Bodhipakkiya-Dhamma. By this way, the progress of Bodhipakkiya-Dhamma will appear clearly. The mentioned doctrinal qualities will build up the good life so to reach the highest target in Buddhism.
